Definition of differential erosion. Erosion that occurs at irregular or varying rates, caused by the differences in the resistance and hardness of surface materials; softer and weaker rocks are rapidly worn away, whereas harder and more resistant rocks remain to form ridges, hills, or mountains. As some minerals expand more than others, temperature changes set up differential stresses that eventually cause the rock to crack apart. Because the outer surface of a rock is often warmer or colder than the more protected inner portions, some rocks may weather by exfoliation – the peeling away of outer layers. DIFFERENTIAL EROSION: Removal and transportation of loose small particles (weathered materials) Different “vehicles” transport weathered materials: - Gravity - mass movement: mudslide + rockslide - Running Water - carries sediment, the farther the particles travel, the rounder the edges are - Glacial Ice - moves particles Weathering and erosion occur at varying rates within a given area. The variation is caused by differences in resistance or susceptibility of various rock types to weathering and erosion. The result is an uneven surface, with the more resistant rocks forming protrusions, hills, or ridges and the more susceptible rocks forming indentations or valleys. Materials vary in their resistance to this attack; some areas are worn down more rapidly than others. It cannot be determined why the river flows atop these protrusions, in opposition to “differential erosion”, a geomorphology principle. We assume it is evidence of geological flood control. We propose an environmental and geomorphological framework for the hydrotechnical design of instream river training. Differential erosion is invoked to account for major differences of form and relief as between one assemblage of associated land forms {i.e.
