The history of rail transport in Liberia began shortly after World War II, when the Freeport of Monrovia was completed, with limited rail access. It had been developed by American military forces. Hi all, Since my days of volunteering on the class 126 at Bo'ness I've always been fascinated by the mystery of what became of the former E&G Swindons which were sold to the Lamco Railroad and exported to Liberia along with some class 08's, what happened to them during the civil war which tore the country apart has been a mystery some enthusiasts have been wondering about for years! He has also visited the former Lamco Railway (added 18th June 2010). The Bong Mine railway is operating along its full 80km route, from the jetty in Monrovia (just beyond the Free Port) up to Bong Mine town.

In 2010, only the Bong mine railway was operational but the Lamco Railway was at least partially rebuilt by Arcelor Mittal and put back into service in 2011.

Lamco Railway. The majority of Liberia's mines are located in its northern border area. Further south, a second iron ore loading port was set up in 1963, on the coast near Buchanan. The associated 166 mi (267 km) long Lamco Railway was simultaneously put into operation, to link the Lamco mine at Yekepa, near the Guinean border, with the new port.
