A child with fetal alcohol syndrome may have specific abnormal facial features, small head size, and problems with development including delayed language, learning, and poor impulse control. The presence of facial features in fetal alcohol syndrome indicates significant brain damage; however, brain damage can occur even in the absence of facial features. The facial deformities are caused mainly due to alcohol consumption between 10-20 weeks gestation. Facial features include small head circumference (microcephaly), small eyes (small palpebral fissures), low nasal bridge, midface … They are all equally likely to cause FAS. Diagnosis. To be diagnosed with fetal alcohol syndrome, a child must have problems in three different areas. Abnormal facial features. Having "abnormal facial features" means that parts of the child's face look different than a child without FAS. Catchment data tend to underestimate FAS incidence because the neonatal period is a difficult time to detect FAS. Not only are facial features associated with the syndrome difficult to recognize, but the central nervous system dysfunction, including mental retardation, may not be identified until several years after birth (5,10,11).
