Salinomycin was administered to chickens intravenously, in the left wing vein, at a dose of 0.25 mg /kg and orally at a dose of 2.5 mg /kg. Residue studies were carried out with supplemented feed at the rate of 100 mg /kg of feed for monensin in turkeys and 70 mg /kg for salinomycin in chickens, respectively. Broiler, roaster and replacement (breeder and layer) chickens Use Sacox 60 to provide salinomycin sodium concentrations ranging from 40-60 g/ton (0.0044% to 0.0066%) for the prevention of coccidiosis in broiler, roaster and replacement chickens caused by Eimeria tenella, E. necatrix, E. acervulina, E. maxima, E. brunetti and E. mivati. Toxicities occur when broiler feed containing salinomycin is accidentally fed to naive breeder hens. Clinical signs in these hen flocks include paralysis with the legs extended backward and decreased feed consumption, egg production, and hatchability. Levels of salinomycin >10 g/ton in breeder-hen feed are sufficient to produce these clinical signs. Salinomycin is widely used as a feed additive to control coccidiosis in the broiler industry world‐wide.

Salinomycin is commonly used as an anticoccidial compound in the broiler industry. It is safe when used at 60 g/ton of feed. Toxicities occur when broiler feed containing salinomycin is accidentally fed to naive breeder hens.

Following oral administration, residues are present only at very low concentrations in liver and muscle that fall below the limit of decision of the assay within 2 days in poultry. Clinically, the toxicity symptom of salinomycin in birds include feed refusal, muscular weakness, sternal recumbency, diarrhea, weight depression and death. Histopathologically, salinomycin induces severe myocardial and skeletal muscle lesions showing myocardial hyperemia, myocardial fiber degeneration and myocardial mitochondria damage. Salinomycin sodium is authorized in the EU as a coccidiostat feed additive. It is used in the prevention of coccidiosis in poultry caused by E. necatrix, E. tenella, E. acervulina, E. brunette, E. maxima, and E. mivati. Salinomycin is active against certain Gram-positive bacteria, whereas Enterobacteriaceae are resistant. Salinomycin is widely used as a feed additive to control coccidiosis in the broiler industry world-wide.

Salinomycin sodium (SAL‐Na) is active against certain Gram‐positive bacteria, while Gram‐negative species are resistant. SAL‐Na at the proposed concentration is unlikely to increase shedding of Salmonella, Escherichia coli and Campylobacter and or induce resistance and cross‐resistance to antimicrobials important in human and animal therapy. Salinomycin Na+ ionophores are metabolized in the liver by cytochrome P450 enzymes, and are excreted mostly into bile and feces as parent compound and metabolites in poultry. Following oral administration, residues are present only at very low concentrations in liver and muscle that fall below the limit of decision of the assay within 2 days in poultry.
This paper presents a rapid economic impact on the poultry industry and is highly prevalent in chicken anticoccidial drugs which were salinomycin, robenidine and decoquinate at (50:50), with or without added salinomycin (120 mg per animal day-1).
